EOIR Appoints 9 New Immigration Judges

Posted on by

The Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) has announced that nine new immigration judges have been appointed this week and will preside in Dallas, San Antonio, Detroit, Buffalo, New York, and Newark, New Jersey.  The new judges come from diverse immigration-related backgrounds, including positions with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the US Department of Justice, and the US Attorney’s Office.

According to EOIR, the immigration judge corps now totals 254 magistrates.  The agency purports an aggressive hiring push for immigration judges throughout this year, with 67 candidates being vetted presently.  This expansion policy is aimed to increase EOIR’s capability to undertake the enormous challenges it facing the immigration adjudication system.  According to a report by Syracuse University, the average wait time for pending cases in immigration courts has hit a record high of 635 calendar days.
