Immigration Paralegal
OVERVIEW:
A well-recognized immigration attorney firm located in Washington DC is seeking an immigration paralegal to join our highly regarded immigration practice. We have an AV rating which is the highest possible rating for lawyers for legal acumen and ethical standards. We have been practicing law since 1981. Our top-notch lawyers represent professional workers, investors, business owners, families, and asylum-seekers from all over the world in visa and naturalization matters as well as in deportation proceedings. We pledge to provide clients professional customer service at every step toward achieving clients’ goals and helping them get a U.S. visa, work permit, or green card.
JOB SUMMARY:
The paralegal will be responsible for providing administrative and legal support to the firm’s immigration attorneys. These responsibilities include maintaining direct client communication, preparing immigration benefit applications, forms, and collecting supporting evidence, preparing witness and document lists, maintaining case files and operating the electronic client management system.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with the client intake process and general case management.
- Work under the supervision of an attorney in interviewing individuals seeking assistance in immigration matters.
- Draft and prepare legal documents, court filings, correspondence and client applications.
- Familiarity and experience with immigration court and filings with EOIR required.
- Perform factual and legal research.
- Maintain client records in accordance with the firm’s policies and procedures.
- Assist with any other office or administrative tasks as requested.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- BA/BS or equivalent in experience, in public policy, language, social sciences, or a related field.
- One or two years experience in immigration practice preferred.
- Facility in the use of computers, preferably PC, Windows-based operating environment.
- Experience working with immigration removal proceedings preferred.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
- Able to write and analyze legal documents, such as: affidavits, immigration forms, request for evidence, motions, etc.
- Be dependable and timely with deadlines.
- Fluency in French or Spanish preferred.
- Be detail-oriented and able to focus on the details of work, accuracy.
- Able to conduct legal research related to the assignment.
- Know about relevant immigration laws, policies, and practices or be willing to learn.
- Able to work efficiently and accurately, with a positive attitude, with clients when language barriers may be an issue.
- Have strong organizational skills and possess the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
- Be an enthusiastic self-starter with the initiative to assist others and work in an autonomous, independent, self-motivated way.
- Be people-oriented — enjoys interacting with people and working on group projects.
- Achievement-oriented — enjoys taking on challenges of new work by being passionate and enthusiastic.
HOURS AND LOCATION:
- Location: Washington, D.C. 20006, on-site.
- Full time, M-F, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- In order to protect all employees, vaccination for COVID preferred
COMPENSATION PACKAGE:
- $23-35/hour depending on experience in immigration law.
- Dental insurance and health insurance.
- Paid time off, 8 paid holidays, and 10 days vacation (vacation after probation and 1 year).
