Supreme Court Rules That Biden Can End the “Remain in Mexico” Policy

Posted on by

On June 30, 2022 the Supreme Court ruled that President Biden could end the Trump-era policy called “Remain in Mexico.” Under this policy, certain non-Mexican citizens who entered the US were sent back to Mexico to wait for their immigration court hearings.

The Supreme Court ruling was 5-4 and the decision states that immigration law gives the federal government the discretion to end this policy. Since the beginning of this policy in 2019, some 70,000 asylum seekers were forced to wait for their hearings in Mexico. Thousands reported that they faced abuse, kidnappings, sexual assault, and beatings while in Mexico.
