New Program Allows Americans to Sponsor Afghan Refugees
Since the last evacuation in Afghanistan, over 68,000 Afghan allies are being housed on Department of Defense bases awaiting resettlement. On October 25, 2021 the State Department announced that they were partnering with Community Sponsorship Hub to launch the “Sponsor Circle Program.” This program allows groups of five Americans to join together to provide resettlement services for a minimum of 90 days to Afghan refugees across the country.
This private program is the first of its kind and is intended to expand the capacity to resettle Afghans. The Sponsorship Circle Hub will offer advisory guidance for self-formation of a sponsor circle and ensure that certain benchmarks are met. This includes background checks, proof of funds ($2275 per evacuee), and submission of a detailed welcome plan. The Sponsor Circles will be responsible for securing housing, providing necessities, assisting with applications for state and federal benefits.
