ICE PLACING TRANSGENDER DETAINEES IN SOLITARY CONFINEMENT
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has continuously sparked debate under the Trump Administration for its infamous treatment of immigrants in its custody and under its care, judged inhumane and cruel by many. Still living up to their reputation, it was recently revealed that ICE officers have been subjecting detained transgender immigrants to solitary confinement on a regular basis. In fact, the International Consortium for Investigative Journalism (ICIJ) certifies in its latest report that immigrants in ICE custody have been placed more than 8400 times in solitary confinement over the past four years merely for daring to go on hunger strike or for being a suicide risk. These conditions actually exacerbated mental health disorders and increased suicide rate among the vulnerable detainees.
This torturous treatment raised the eyebrows of the United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on Torture who called for the banning of solitary confinement of more than two weeks, except for «very exceptional circumstances».
This latest revelation undoubtedly relaunches the debate on a much needed reform of the immigration system as ICE officials’ morals and ethics are once again questioned.
