DHS To Step Up Deportation of Haitians

Posted on by

The Department of Homeland Security announced it will step up the deportation of Haitian nationals after a recent increase in the number of arrivals at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

The deportation of Haitians was significantly reduced following the 7.0 earthquake in January 2010.  After the earthquake, many Haitians fled to Brazil and other nations for safety.

According to the DHS, Haitians will now be subject to rapid deportation known as “expedited removal.” Those who express a fear of returning to Haiti will be screened for possible asylum.

Haitians who have resided in the U.S. continuously since January 2011 and currently have Temporary Protective Status, will not be impacted by this change.

The Obama Administration needs to extend the same compassion the President called for at the United Nations this week to Haitians and end these aggressive attempts to send them back to a country in ruin.
